Reclaimed White Oak and Walnut Box

Box made from reclaimed White Oak (barn stall) and reclaimed Walnut (base board trim from and old house). Used scrap leather for the lid strap and deer skin for the bottom interior. I found the deer skin at a yard sale when I was in the middle of building the box.

Small Chair

Made in the course of one Saturday. My wife asked me to build a chair for a small child that she watches during the week. She noticed he was climbing and sitting on a step stool we use in the kitchen and thought this would fit him better. It sits pretty low to the ground - 4-5 inches - and is pretty sturdy. I've caught the other kids on it when he is not around.

Pine Blanket Chest

Pine blanket chest made for my sister-in-law. The shape is loosely based on a design from Fine Woodworking

magazine. Finished with amber shellac and a couple of coats of paste wax.

Franklin Chair

Something I’ve wanted to make for quite a while now. Found the plans in “The Essential Pine Book”.

Made from pine I picked up at a local home center. The wood was priced as “value” wood so I might have 5 – 8 bucks worth of wood in it. A few goofs here and there and some mental notes for next time (if there is a next time). Please forgive some of the ‘waviness’ of the curves – especially the top – as I don’t yet own a bandsaw and my jigsaw skills are severely lacking.

Joiner's Mallet

..or rattle hammer as my son calls it.

First of all thanks to ben for his post and inspiration. I was able to find the complete set of
plans from Shop Notes Issue 2 March 1992 which described making the
handle in more detail.

Made from leftover Walnut and White Oak. I had a blast building this one and I’m planning to make more just
because it was so much fun. I finished it with a couple of coats of
Danish Oil. The weights for the head are split-shot sinkers (small
ones) that I just happened to have in my tackle box. And the leather I
found at a local craft store – a bag of remnants for 5 bucks.

I followed the plans exactly as they are except for putting
the epoxy in the lead weights – hence the name rattle hammer.
